Eduardo Jorge

Eduardo Jorge Martins Alves Sobrinho is Secretary of the Environment for the City of São Paulo.   He develops priority projects related to the protection of natural resources and the quality of the air, water, and soil in São Paulo, as well as initiatives focused on eco-economy, the appreciation of parks and green areas, and a plan for planting more trees in the city.

Dr. Jorge served  two terms as Secretary of Health for the City of São Paulo from 1989 to 1990, and from 2001 to 2002.  A State Representative (1983-1987) and a Federal Congressman (1987-2003), he was the leader of the Labor Party (PT) in the House of Representatives in 1992.

As a Member of Parliament, he was coauthor of the Constitutional Legislation pertaining to the Brazilian Unified Health System (1988) and author of the Law of Generic Medications, and author of the law that regulates Family Planning in Brazil and establishes criteria for access to methods and means for Planned Parenthood.

He was the coordinator of the Gandhi Network: Health and Culture of Peace and Non-Violence (2004) and a member of the Executive Committee of the 12th National Conference on Health.
